AISHE/ICED Seminar: Nested Creativity

This workshop will examine a variety of ways of embedding creativity within
higher education settings. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework will be
used to suggest that creative individuals act on their environment, and that
the environment dynamically influences individuals and groups to seize
creative educational opportunities.

Using a series of interactive activities and tools, the place of creativity
in higher education will be explored by:
- the critical examination of current educational philosophies and values
- considering innovative ways of working within higher education institutions and systems
- developing flexibility in higher education programmes
- indexing creativity within subject domains and disciplines
- encouraging divergence and creative thinking in higher education
teachers and students.

LIN Workshop: Effective College Teaching

In collaboration with AISHE, EDIN, NDLR, Shannon Consortium, Flexible Learning Project and Student Led Learning Project, LIN are very pleased to welcome Dr. Richard Felder and Dr. Rebecca Brent who will be presenting on the 14th and 15th September.

Workshop Title : ‘Effective College Teaching’

Venue : Hospitality Building, AIT

Time and Date : 9:30 to 5:30 – 14th September, 9:30 to 1:00 – 15th September.

Places are limited, and will be awarded on a first come first served basis. Please book through LIN@gmit.ie When making your booking please indicate the grouping to which you belong i.e. AISHE, EDIN, NDLR, Shannon Consortium, Flexible Learning Project and/or Student Led Learning Project.
Please also note that members of EDIN are given first preference for places on the ‘Instructional Development’ workshop. When booking for this workshop, please indicate whether or not you are a member of EDIN. If you are not a member of EDIN, you can still reserve a provisional place.
Overview of the ‘Effective College Teaching’ workshop

This workshop provides tools and strategies for college professors to make their classes more effective. Topics addressed include the following:

  • How do students learn? How do teachers teach? What goes wrong in the process?
  • How do I plan a course? What can I do in the first week to get it off to a good start?
  • What do I need to do to be an effective lecturer?
  • How can I get students actively involved in learning, even if there are 200 in the class?
  • What are inductive teaching methods (inquiry,problem-based learning,…) How well do they work? Why should I use them?
  • How can I assess learning and skill development? How can I design tests that are both rigorous and fair?
  • What are common student problems and problem students? How canI deal with them?

The Galway Symposium 2009

It promises to be a really stimulating event with excellent keynote presenters, discussion sessions and workshops. This year’s title is “Design for Learning: Curriculum and Assessment in Higher Education” and will span topics such as learning outcomes, Bologna, assessment, design of courses and modules, etc. The keynotes are:

  • Prof Kathy Isaacs, University of Pisa and Bologna expert
  • Prof. Liz McDowell, head of the “Assessment for Learning” national centre (Newcastle,    England)
  • Prof. Ferdinand von Prondzynski, President of DCU
  • Dr. Kelly Coate, NUI Galway and co-author of “Engaging the Curriculum in Higher Education”
  • Dr. Janet Parker,  Senior Research Fellow at the Open University and Editor in Chief of Arts and Humanities in Higher Education and Executive Editor of Teaching in Higher Education
  • Prof. Phil Race, Higher Education Consultant and visiting Professor at Leeds Met.

A number of the workshops and sessions have been organized in collaboration with various other groups and projects including, for example, GMIT, NAIRTL, FIN.

Taking a broad view of professional learning in education (for teachers, leaders, lecturers, researchers) this year’s ESAI Annual Conference addresses the challenges, conditions, processes and contexts of professional education. As such, the theme seeks to examine the dynamics, scope and conditions of professional learning taking into account the challenges of increasing diversity, social change and sustainable development in an era of life-long learning.

NDLR Second Annual Symposium 2008

We are pleased to invite you to the second National Digital Learning Repository (NDLR) symposium where we will be looking back at the activities and achievements from the past four years of the NDLR project and showcase the endeavours and challenges, cultural, organisational and technological faced by the Communities of Practice’ in all aspects of sharing teaching and learning practice and digital resources for teaching and learning in a digital age.

Invited speakers will take the opportunity to look at the future of initiatives like the NDLR project against the backdrop of the current climate for teaching & learning initiatives in Higher Education and propose some practical ways (through facilitated workshops)  in which we can achieve a sustainable future vision.

This is an opportunity for academic staff across different subject disciplines in Irish Higher Education and members of NDLR Communities of Practice (CoP) to present case studies that demonstrate the support and practice of their cop and their endeavours to making on-line learning resources more openly available and accessible.
