NDLR Second Annual Symposium 2008

On Tuesday 2nd December, the National Digital Learning Repository (NDLR) will be hosting the second annual symposium at University College Dublin. We would like to invite you to this event where we will be looking back at the activities and achievements from the past four years of the NDLR project and showcase the endeavours and challenges, cultural, organisational and technological faced by the Communities of Practice’ in all aspects of sharing teaching and learning practice and digital resources for teaching and learning in a digital age.

We are very pleased to welcome Professor Ronald Barnett, Professor of Higher Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, Dr. Ahrash N Bissell, Executive Director, ccLearn, Creative Commons, Chris Pegler, The Open University and John Casey, TrustDR IPR and Jorum who will be presenting on the day along with all of our Communities of Practice.

DCU NDLR Information Seminar: Activities and Achievements to Date where Muireann O’Keeffe, Eamon Costello, Dermot Brabazon and Morag Munro will provide an information session that will detail the activities and contributions that DCU have made to the NDLR in the past 12 months.

Friday 2nd May
NDLR RLO Fest - Train the Trainers Seminar:  facilitated by Diane Cashman in Seminar Room, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Woodview House, Belfield, UCD, 10:00am – 14:00pm.
This seminar is for any CoP coordinator or NDLR coordinator who would like to facilitate a RLO fest workshop in their own institution. Training materials, tips and techniques will be presented. As part of the NDLR project work for 2008, UCD will be coordinating a RLO festival in the coming months. The RLO fest will run in partner institutions and will consist of a one or two day workshop on developing Reusable Learning Objects. As part of the festival, you are invited to attend a 'train the trainer' 3 hour seminar which will run in UCD on Friday May the 2nd.

The aim of this interactive workshop will be to show Instructional Design as the process whereby learning, not technology, is kept at the centre of eLearning development in AIT.

Advanced Learning and Adaptive Problem Solving Techniques: Practical Lessons from Cognitive Science

This practical workshop will focus on advanced deep learning and adaptive problem solving techniques based on research in cognitive science into the development of superior mental performance. Particular attention will be paid to the application of these techniques to improving both research and teaching skills. These techniques will be introduced within the context of creating an ongoing Reflective Teaching and Research Portfolio for Professional Development.

Dr. Delany recently successfully taught a variant of this course to staff and postgrads of Cornell University NY ( http://www.trii.org/courses/act.html ) as an invited lecturer. Eminent attendees of this popular course included Prof. Bernice Bernstein (an award-winning neurobiologist and the first women president of the prestigious Society for Neuroscience) and a range of doctors and professors from several faculties. Dr Delany has been invited back to Cornell to run the course again.

Derived from findings in cognitive psychology the course principles and techniques are designed to improve the meaningful learning, creative thinking and deep insight skills of researchers in both the sciences and the humanities.

Maths and Statistics Service Teaching Community of Practice

This workshop will include the following:

  • Each participant will be shown how to create an animation using excel charting and some simple Visual Basic.
  • Each participant will create an animation for themselves and all participants will get a copy of all animations made on the day. Such animations can be usefully created as a lab activity for students or as demonstrations in class, without requiring specialist software.

Participants will also see how to access and download learning objects from the NDLR. One of the excel animation learning objects will also be uploaded to the NDLR at the end of the session (with the associated metadata).

The Limerick workshop is co-hosted by the Shannon Consortium.
