The UCC German Department is hosting a photo competition to mark this year’s ‘Anti-Racist Workplace Week’ which runs from November 6 to 10.Â
Book tokens valued at €50, €30 and €20 for the winners, and all monies raised will go to the United Nations Children’s Fund. Further information on the photo competition from german@ucc.ie

The National Digital Learning Repository (NDLR) is a HEA funded pilot project between Irish Universities and the Institutes of Technology to support the collaboration and sharing of learning and teaching resources.Â

The Research Centre on Multilingualism and the University of Hamburg will host the 6th International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB6) from May 30 – June 2 2007. ISB welcomes proposals on any aspect of research on bilingualism. The online paper submission date has been extended to 29 October 2006.

On Saturday, October 7th, the Association of Third-Level Teachers of German in Ireland held their annual conference in NUI Galway. We in the NDLR-Modern Languages group decided to take the opportunity to interview a couple of the participants in our recording studio.
Firstly, Prof. Florian Krobb of NUI Maynooth spoke about the Association, its activities and challenges; followed by Antje Schlamm, Director of the London Office of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) speaking about her organisation and her previous experience of working in the University of Limerick.

A special celebration of the poetry of the late Michael Hartnett, featuring his Irish and English translations of St. John of the Cross and Federico Garcia Lorca. The original Spanish texts will be read by Diego Valverde; Michael Hartnett’s versions will be read by Tomas Mac Siomoin. Both Diego and Tomas will also read a selection of their own work.
Music will be by Aindrias de Staic, Estaban Gonzalez and the Lacikos – a heady sonic brew of rumba reels, gypsy jigs and flamenco, celebrating the Atlantean links between the west of Ireland and northern Spain.
The event will take place on October 10th 2006 at 9.00pm in the Boom Boom Room, Conway’s Bar, 70 Parnell Street, Dublin. Admission 10 euro.

The Department of Italian, NUI Galway has announced its Public Lecture Series 2006/7 programme, with the theme ‘Italian Achievements, Then and Now‘. October highlights include:Â

- Shakespeare’s Italy: a journey through never–never land. Marco Liviero, Eton College, Windsor, UK (October 10)

The 2nd Institutes of Technology (IoT) Language Policy Network meeting will take place in Athlone IT on Tuesday 10th October 2006 from 10.30a.m. to 4p.m.Â
At the initial meeting at ITT Dublin Tallaght last May a number of Action (research) Groups were formed and reports from these groups will form the basis of our 2nd meeting. Dr. Muiris O’Laoire as guest speaker will address participants on the subject of National Language Policy (LP).  Click here to view further information on the IoT policy network rationale, objectives, and plans for future activities – including a third meeting with is scheduled in February/March 2007.
