Conversation between artists. Ángel Marcos + Ronan McCrea

round table discussion

In line with the exhibtion “Affinity Paths. 10 Spanish photographers” we have the pleasure to invite the photographers and artists Ángel Marcos (Spain) and Ronan McCrea (Ireland) to discuss about the contemporary context of photography in Spain and Ireland. Chariman: Oliva María Rubio, curator of the exhibition.

Ángel Marcos (Valladolid, 1955). Ángel’s work is to be found within the contemporary trends of photography as conceptual art, introducing the concept of narration, to near cinematographic effect. His different series give rise to reflection on aspects such as desolation, exclusion, desire, lack of communication or isolation.

Ronan McCrea (Dublín, 1969) lives and works in Dublin, from where he develops varying projects in photography, projections, installations and sculpture. He has exhibited extensively, both across Ireland and internationally. In 2005, he was one of the seven artists to represent Ireland in the Venice Biennale.

Oliva María Rubio is Curator and Director of Exhibitions at La Fábrica (Madrid, Spain)

language anxiety and oral exams

As we all know, activities that require oral performance in a secon language are more anxiety-provoking than others. As Oral examinations are about to start at University and leaving cert level. I think it’s a good time to recommend you a few readings I have found interesting in the last few years.
I have used some of the activities they recommend in my spoken classes and revamp them in Spanish to start giving students skills to cope with their language anxiety.
I’ll be happy to share them and discuss them with you if you are interested.

German Films

Wednesday, 29 April 2009, 4:00 pm
Adalante Muchachas
Dir.: Erika Harzer und Kalle Stayman, colour, 60 min., Germany/Hondouras 2004

This film tells the story of four young women from Honduras. Seydi, Wendy, Cristel and Kenia could not be more different from one another; nevertheless they share one big interest: All of them love to play soccer. When their clubs are playing against each other in the women`s league encounters happen that would never take place in “normal life” as they come from four completely different milieus that normally do not have any contact. There is the poor underclass that lives in slums on the outskirts of the city on one side and the well-off middle class from the villa area in the city on the other side

Presented by SALIS Dublin City University

In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Irland, the Instituto Cervantes Dublin and the Chilean Embassy in Ireland

Franco Irish Literary Festival

THe alliance Francaise presents the 2009 literary festival.
2000-09, 10 years already!

Ten years already and the memories flow; how can we choose between the emotional encounter of the two former hostages Jean-Paul Kauffman and Brian Keenan, the huge success of JMG Le Clézio’s contribution, the roars of laughter at Nell McCafferty’s caustic humour or Azouz Begag’s short musical interludes on the guitar and much more?

This year the festival will rock us to the rhythm of the turmoil of love and death, between joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, hatred and love. L’amour, La mort, a universal theme written about since the very first literature and for this year’s festival the theme to be discussed by our writers who will reveal their very souls!
All sorts of questions will be raised: why is the theme of love so closely linked to that of death? Is passionate love a source of pleasure or pain? Is it as wonderful as it is devastating? How far would one go for love? Is first love always the best? Must love always end?

We have all experienced these terrifying feelings, at one time or another, without always understanding them. So… in April we will attempt to solve these mysteries!

The Festival is organised jointly by the Alliance Française Dublin and the Cultural Service of the French Embassy. It owes its longevity to the trust in which it is held by its many partners who support it. Its success has also been made possible by the generosity of its sponsors – the Ireland Fund of France, The Arts Council, Culture Ireland, Foras Na Gaeilge, Poetry Ireland, The Irish Writers’ Centre, Ireland Literature Exchange, Dublin City Council – by the help of several companies, by broad media coverage (The Irish Times, RTÉ lyric fm, The Irish Eyes etc…) as well as by the active participation of its Organising Committee.

Naturally we also salute the involvement of all our writers, the real actors in this great event. We thank them sincerely for having accepted our invitation and are convinced that they will make this 10th anniversary an exceptional edition.
So join them from the 3rd to the 5th of April at Dublin Castle. More information at:
