Dental Teaching in Ireland

Dental Teaching in Ireland

"To set up and develop partners in a Community of Practice (CoP) in Dentistry “Dental Teaching in Ireland”.

Institutional Coverage: The project involves collaboration with University Dental School & Hospital, Cork (Lead University); School of

Dental Science (Trinity College Dublin; Dental School, Queens University Belfast. Due to the current allocation of funds, it has been agreed between partner universities that UCC would pilot the initial project (see number and type of resources). Once completed the Audio Visual Media (AVM) would be forwarded to the partner Universities for evaluation in relation to content, quality and use as an educational resource. It is hoped that in the future a repository for dental teaching could be extended to include educational material on Behavioural Science, Prosthodontics, Dental Biomaterials and Dental Technology.

Number and type of resources

Audio Visual Media (AVM) have been produced in the form of videos relating the proportioning and mixing of dental cements: zinc phosphate cement & glass ionomer cement.

These AVM materials were produced in a clinical dental teaching environment involving expertise in dental materials science, dental nursing and related disciplines.

Pre-production involved the development and piloting of appropriate scripts to accompany the materials.  Production was in WMV format using a commercial camcorder (Sony DCR-DVD110E) in a real clinical environment. Post-production was accomplished using the editing suite Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on a PC.

These media are being initially piloted and trialled with respect to an undergraduate dental student population and a trainee dental nursing population with regard to accessibility and applicability. The evaluation of the AVM (zinc phosphate) indicated a very positive response to the relevance and presentation of the material with a strong preference for online availability rather than in a portable form.

Scope of the project

The vision for this Community of Practice (CoP) would be to create an online learning resource where each school would contribute instructional videos or online resources in clinical disciplines where they have particular expertise. This would allow for the wide dissemination of teaching material. Furthermore, it would promote collaboration between the three dental schools in developing student centred and innovative forms of teaching.  Additionally, the CoP would promote, support and sustain the integration of teaching & learning and research.

Our primary focus is:

  • The creation of a Community of Practice for dental teaching in Ireland
  • The introduction of a new learning entry point for undergraduate dental students
  • The provision of teaching which takes account of the changing socio-cultural context in undergraduate education
